“He who walks with wise men will be wise,But the companion of fools will suffer harm” (Proverbs 13:20).
Many a motivational speaker has cried, “Show me your friends and I will show you your future.”All things being equal I doubt that anyone would doubt the wisdom of those words. The apostle Paul came at it from a different angle: “Follow me as I follow Christ,” was his advice for those seeking spiritual mentorship (1Cor.11:1).Too many Christians fall into the hands of friends who are, at best, mediocre in their efforts to seek Christlike wisdom. Surround yourself with brethren who struggle with the same issues year after year, and you will find yourself being dragged along through the same endless hopeless ruts.We all suffer harm. But if certain of your companions are inviting harm upon the souls of others, you may want to confront them with a determined dose of distance. You will shake your head at who some consider ‘a person to be looked up to.’ Some of my brethren go to the internet and praise men and women whom they have never met and who they know preach a gospel not found in scripture.Godly disciple is tough. Those spiritual men and women who are worthy to be looked up to—pillars of faith in the Lord’s church—didn’t become such by taking their cues from church ne’er-do-wells. They are the stuff of rigorous Bible study, vital prayer, innumerable good deeds, and a cast iron will to do what it takes to further the Lord’s church. They love souls, because they know God loves them. These are the ‘Wise.’ Make friends of them. Walk with them, and you will be wise.John StaigerIf you have been blessed by this message, please feel free to: Like, Comment or Share it with your friends.
