I have seen once honest men renege on their debts. These are those whose lifestyles are the envy of workingmen. Lifestyles continued while the taxes of those workingmen are used to clear away those temporary fiscal glitches. Proof that poor men don’t write tax laws.
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!” (Phil.4:13). These are the words which should be programmed into the minds and engraved upon the hearts of our children and young people.
The world offers empty advice and heart-breaking solutions to the most basic of life’s struggles. There is something terribly wrong when Christians encourage each other to look for advice for sin problems from those who don’t even believe that evil is sin.
However, we should not be surprised that a slave looks to his owner’s hand for sustenance. It is not without sound reason that the Bible warns: “And the borrower becomes the lender’s slave” (Pro.22:7).
If I am to engage in a war of wits with the financial world, I will lose, hands down. They sometimes lose to each other, but not to me. I am the unsophisticated, a potential victim to be fleeced one dollar at a time.
Debt is a curse from hell. A demon knew too well by too many in this debt saturated world. I have nothing but sympathy for good people who are suffering cruelly in the grip of overbearing fees and interest payments. Debt is not called a hole for anything. You must dig yourself out of it, and then stay out of it.
Here are some things to ponder:
*Change your spending habits.
*You can’t borrow your way out of debt. You are just digging a deeper hole.
*Search the Bible for God’s attitudes on money. This is your only long-term solution.
*Read Christian books on: “How to get out of debt.”
*If the book says that there is such thing as good debt, leave it on the shelf.
*Pay all your debts off.
*There is at least one person in your church who can give you godly advice, ask (but test the spirits).
*Stay out of debt—it is God’s money.
*Debt kills opportunities to be generous.
*The best way to save money is not to spend it.
May God bless us all with the sense to teach the next generation that godly stewardship means controlling the resources that God puts into the saint’s hands. Something that most of our generation has found impossible to do.
It was the apostle Paul who said: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!” (Phil.4:13). He was talking about contentment through having only what he needed. For many, contentment starts with an escape from debt slavery! Jesus makes it possible!
