“I am entering upon the history of a period rich in disaster, gloomy with wars, rent with seditions.”
As current as these words may sound, they were actually penned 2000 years ago by the Roman historian, Publius Cornelius Tacitus.
They immediately brought to mind Solomon’s words: “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9).
Whether the times in which we live are to be chronicled as periods of excitement or gloom, we may never know; history will have its own take.
In practical terms, Christians need only concern themselves with one thing: How to use the opportunities before them to bring many to Glory on the Last Day.
Paul told the Ephesian church to “make the most of every opportunity, because the times are evil” (Ephesians 5:16). We have no hope of getting rid of all the evil in our time, but we can work to hold high its cure—Jesus Christ!
The first person that I heard use the term “Doctor Google” was himself a doctor. He was speaking to the frustrations he endures when his patients come armed with a diagnosis from the internet.
Many people have their own equivalent of a “Doctor Google” when it comes to curing the evils of the world. If they are not trying to reform the political landscape with their opinions, they are trying to prove that current happenings are specifically written about in the Bible.
However, along with the sick patient, we too need to go straight to a physician—in our case Doctor Jesus.
The most effective way to be a part of the cure is to point to the cure.
“And hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Mark 2:17).
