I’ve hardly met a person yet who doesn’t consider themselves to be as shrewd as Lieutenant Columbo when it comes to sussing people out. Admittedly, some are better than others, but we all suffer from blind spots when trying to see past the veneer that obscures the inner heart.
Jesus assures us that the heart of a man is seen for what it is if you just listen to what he says. When considering the seemingly endless amounts of nonsense that swills around in the heart of man, Jesus wastes no words: “For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. (Matthew 12 :34).
We must never forget that our first parents were evicted from Eden for filling their hearts with thoughts of being like God; despite the warnings of dire consequences. We never learn, do we?
Hard on the heels of that Eden Incident came the Flood. God does not leave us wondering as to why He inflicted such devastation upon the earth. Scripture says:
“Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5).
Jesus warned that failure to heed his instructions concerning the pending disaster couldn’t end well: “Be on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap” (Luke 21:34).
Self-examination is not only a very good thing to do, but it is also a very easy thing to do. All you have to do is just look at yourself:
“Just as you can see your own face reflected in water, so your heart reflects the kind of person you are” (Proverbs 27:19ERV).
The Heart of the Matter is:
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23)
