We do well to stop to bow our heads or fall on our knees in prayer before God; for He is worthy of our worship.
But wherever we are, or whatever our posture, it is what fills our heads about God that determines whether we are worshiping before him.
In general terms the Lord’s church has referred to “Worship” as the Sunday morning church service of the local congregation. Despite the opinions of some, it is incorrect to assume that the average member doesn’t understand that worship is their whole Christian life experience; that is correctly preached.
Our problems come when our heads and hearts are in neutral, and our habits take over. It is then that we are in danger of confining our “worship” to that sub-one-hour Sunday church meeting with most of our local brethren.
Jesus told the Samaritan woman that “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:24). The state of your spirit, which is inextricably linked to your understanding and attitude toward the truth of God, determines whether your worship is vain or acceptable before God. Wherever your head and heart are, there your object of worship abides.
The notion that regularly turning up to “church” at a “church of Christ” makes us “true worshipers” should make us shudder. The church, the true Israel of God, are those who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in anything they bring to God in the form of outward holiness (Philippians 3:3).
However, your body, that outward expression of what goes on within—made holy by Christ—is that which you offer continually to God as an acceptable sacrifice.
“Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. (Romans 12:1).
