In the early years of my walk with Christ, I had the honour of doing door-to-door evangelism with some of the most dedicated Christians you will ever meet. It was hard work and tested one’s faith and resolve in every way imaginable. It was on the first ‘Campaign for Christ’ that I learned a song that I remember by heart to this day. After our morning meetings, before we all went forth to go door-to-door, Rod Kyle would lead us in that beautiful song:
Lead me to some soul today
O teach me, Lord, just what to say
Friends of mine are lost in sin
And cannot find their way
Few there are who seem to care
Few there are who pray
Melt my heart and fill my life
Give me one soul today
When teaching about winning souls for Christ, this song inevitably plays in my head.
It is our heart’s desire that we are used by the Lord to reach out to this lost and dying world. To pray, “Lead me to some soul today,” is the perfect place to begin. It acknowledges that we need the guidance of the Lord; a thing He will give in abundance to the faithful.
Before launching out into the wide world, the best people to start with in your soul winning efforts are your friends and family. Much time spent in silent prayer will tune your heart and words towards the centre of what matters–their need to know that God loves them and wants to show them how to be saved.
Some of the hardest evangelistic work you may ever do is trying to convert your nearest and dearest to Christ, but it is the best gift you will ever give.
“Those who are wise will shine as the brightness of the expanse. Those who turn many to righteousness will shine as the stars forever and ever (Daniel 12:3WEB).
