“Good people bring good things out of the good they stored in their hearts” (Luke 6:45).
I knew a wealthy businessman who once lamented, “I’ve made millions, but only a fraction of what I could have made if I had had just one partner I could trust.” I asked why he hadn’t done background checks on the lives and habits of those who cost him time and money. He said that it was impossible to know what some people are going to do before it is too late.
I told him that Jesus would have advised that a closer look at their past deeds is usually an accurate indicator of what is in them.
Be it the desire for money, power, or popularity, somehow the baser side of humanity sits ready to take over. What is it about getting more of what you want that makes you less satisfied with what we have?
The simple answer is: “Only Jesus can satisfy you.”
Jesus brought love down from heaven and made it available to all people. Accept it, and you will seek to fill your heart with the goodness of God. Reject it, and you will seek to fill your heart with the goodness of this world. The first is soul-satisfying, the latter, soul-destroying.
Jesus calls our hearts, “Treasure storehouses.” What is in your heart is that which you value most, so you will add to it. Also, what is in there is what is going to come out, and the value of your treasure is going to be seen for what it really is.
Good treasure is something that Christian wants. But for our “Treasure storehouse” to be full of that which satisfies, it must be stocked with things added by a life walked in the Spirit: “Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Gal.5:22-23).
The good that is stored up, is the good that we will share for the good of all.
