The Third:“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain…” (Ex.20:7)

The Third:“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain…” (Ex.20:7)

I’m sure we agree, despite all temptation, that calling the wrath of God down upon others is ill-advised. Jesus’ words, (slightly adjusted by our parents): “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone,” causes sober minds to pause to reflect first upon their possible part in the use of God’s name in vain. Tragically, the entertainment industry is a veritable sewer of blaspheme. It constantly pours forth its filth into our homes, cars and headphones through movies and songs—It is everywhere, and hard to avoid.Christians have to work hard to keep blaspheme out of their hearts and minds. These influences demean the Name of God—everything for which we stand! Movie directors have railed against those who take offense, and threaten court action against those who might censor their material. Yes, pray for them:“Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”They know their sin, but they do not understand their end. They are literally inviting God’s wrath down upon themselves. The second part of this Third Commandment warns of the inevitable disaster that is coming:“…for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain” (Ex.20:7).Woe is me if I ever consider joining that chorus of unbelievers who rail against God. They hail their discontent against all things holy by adding the name of Christ to their expletives.May we ever recoil at such things to the point that we expel them from our lives.Instead, we exalt with King David:“Therefore I will praise you, LORD, among the nations;I will sing the praises of your name.
